For many people, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi remains a figure of mystery. For others, he is remembered as a sage who deeply influenced the West by making spiritual practice more accessible through the technique of Transcendental Meditation.
His teachings influenced many people, including writers, artists, filmmakers, and public thinkers. Certain media currents in contemporary cinema and popular culture have also drawn inspiration from his message. Among those who have studied Maharishi from a media and cultural perspective are Douglas E. Cowan, a scholar specializing in religion, film, television, and popular culture, as well as those who have examined the work and spiritual commitments of filmmaker David Lynch.
Transcendental Meditation and the Media
When Maharishi communicated his message, especially toward the end of the 1980s, he often spoke of the Age of Enlightenment, the New Age, an age of peace and serenity, and even the possibility of a world government devoted to peace. His teachers had also learned and transmitted advanced practices, including the siddhis, such as yogic flying or levitation.

The Transcendental Meditating Filmmaker: David Lynch
For some reasons, David Lynch was viewed by some as a money "go getter" for the Maharishi organization because, whenever he would be interviewed, he had good words for Maharishi.
One way to understand this is to recognize that even well-known figures who create disturbing or unsettling films may still carry an inner light. This image of the filmmaker on a green banknote does not simply suggest money or fame. Rather, it evokes a man held captive by the dullness and apparent dead end of everyday life, searching in vain for a way to escape through dreams and imagination.
Some others may remember the film that portrays the more-than-ordinary everyday life of the character known as Eraserhead, who escapes into his imagination.
